The
currently planned program includes the following core areas. Please
check mark the activities that you would be the most interested in:
Activity Offerings
Contemporary Theater
¨ Work together to develop a
series of short sketches on local and contemporary issues reflective of various
struggles to be part of a final performance and to help define a shared
understanding of struggle.
Mask Making
¨ Experience the importance of mask making cross-culturally and how they
are used in celebration of tradition and struggle.
Poetry
¨ Explore your writing skills to express personal and local struggles
through poetry and music and learn how to express your message
strategically.
Stenciling/Screen Printing
¨ Use an art form that can be used to make your own artistic designs to
share with the rest of the local community.
Written Arts / Book Making
¨ Archive your own words and
struggles in a journal or book that you create. Find everyday products
and turn them into an expression of your experiences. Books can then be
shared with family and the community to tell a story.
Shotokan
Karate
¨ Learn traditional martial arts which is focused on
deriving strength and power from the bottom all the way to impact.
Stitching/Sewing & Repair
¨ Learn some skills for sustainability! Both creative
(wear your art!) and useful (repair that hole in your bag), we'll also think of
ways in which we can buy less and still have our needs met. Bring items that
need repair and see what we can do for ourselves.
Know Your Rights
¨ This workshop focuses on
what your rights are. Learn how police
often mislead citizens out of using their rights as citizens. We will discuss how to handle and survive
police encounters.
Sustainability / Food production
¨ Learn where various foods come from and some cultural botany. Discover how foods are grown and processed
through spending time at a local farm.
Open House & Showing: Youth will have a dedicated
space to share with the local community and family members what they have
learned throughout the program with some performances and showings that will include
art work, dance, poetry, and theater defining their shared analysis of struggle.
The program emphasizes a safe environment for
self-expression based on social justice and free of racism, sexism and other
forms of oppression.
