Programs
The Bayside Grange works with many organizations to assist in hosting a number of educational, informative and cultural programs.
As the oldest agricultural fraternity in the country, "The Patrons of Husbandry" were an important part of the Populist movement to help farmers move up to the middle class. They encountered limited infrastructure for expanding production, as well as access to power, water, technical expertise, labor and consumer markets due to railroad monopolies.
Nationally, the Grange has focused on issues of trade, the farm and energy bills, rural access to technology and health care. In California, Granges are working to maintain the viability of our own organizations through sharing knowledge and building partnerships with diverse members and the coalitions they represent.
But there continues to be huge disparities in agriculture due to classism, racism, sexism, and many other ism's of social disparity. In our work at the Bayside Grange, these systems of struggle are always a part of our discussions and planning of programs.
Throughout California, many "Green Granges" offer workshops for people working in agriculture, celebrate with organic food tastings, engage in general planning issues and strive to balance the needs of watersheds and farms. They also strive to teach by example by reaching out to people of color, historically preserving our own buildings, hosting demonstration & community gardens, and upgrading our own buildings with photovoltatic solar collectors & demand water heaters among other improvements.
These are some of the programs we are working on in Humboldt County:
